In a recent McKinsey Survey, respondents viewed three non-cash motivators – praise from immediate managers, leadership attention (for example, one-on-one conversations), and a chance to lead projects or task forces – as no less or even more effective motivators than the three highest-rated financial incentives: cash bonuses, increased base pay, and stock or stock options.
The survey’s top three non-financial motivators play critical roles in making employees feel that their companies value them, take their well-being seriously, and strive to create opportunities for career growth. These themes recur constantly in most studies on ways to motivate and engage employees.
There couldn’t be a better time to reinforce more cost-effective approaches. Money’s traditional role as the dominant motivator is under pressure from declining corporate revenues, sagging stock markets, and increasing scrutiny by regulators, activist shareholders, and the general public.

Worked with a client’s team to implement a job family framework, bringing consistency to the business and ensuring strong communication structures were in place to embed and support the change. While I provided expertise and guidance, the team owned the journey and the outcomes, and now have the skills to manage it going forward.
I’ve lived and worked in four European countries, in global as well as European roles – I understand how to bring commonality and consistency, while appreciating the differences, when there are cultural, economic and fiscal differences.
Led the people workstream of a business transformation program which had the purpose of implementing new technology and business processes for a customer complaints department. Through the people workstream we brought together and delivered on a suite of activity to resolve issues across the employee lifecycle, improving recruitment and induction, ongoing learning & development, job and organisation design, performance measurement and support, and of course reward and recognition.
Created a consolidated grade and salary range framework for client that had acquired multiple small businesses over several years. Worked with the HR team to utilise this framework across other HR processes, embedding a single culture, linking employees’ career development with the brand and values.
Redesigned and implemented a successful sales incentive scheme for a global leader in L&D.
Designed and implemented a new reward architecture and communication strategy, for an energy company, to improve employee understanding of their reward, and drove improvement in employee engagement.
Project managed restructuring projects and harmonisation of terms and conditions, to enable organisations to improve efficiency, save costs, etc. in line with business strategy.
Delivered a global grade architecture across 44 countries for a not-for-profit professional membership organisation.
